I have (and LOVE) the Alpha 4.0 vest for all my marathon training miles, but I wanted a lighter alternative for half marathon training. The Spry 3.0 race vest is a great alternative. It sits higher on my back than the Alpha which I found really comfortable. I bought the 1 liter reservoir and it is the perfect amount of fluid (but if I need more on really hot days, there is plenty of room to carry an additional soft flask in one of the large front pockets. Just like the Alpha, it does not bounce at all. The ONLY reason I didn’t rate it 5 stars is the extra trash pockets in front don’t cinch closed and I placed my car key in one and it fell out. Now I keep my key in the back pocket clipped to the key clip the way it is intended. My go to vest is still the Alpha 4.0, but this Spry vest is a great alternative when I want to keep things a bit “lighter”.

Love the Spry. This is my 3rd Spry vest, having had the 2.0 & 2.5 before this. I love the Spey because it is small. I fill the I liter bladder with straight water, and use the front pocket(s) for a mix (liquid IV for me). I like the magnetic pocket. I found the elastic pocket in front of the left shoulder too high for a phone; it’ll fit, but uncomfortable position. If I think I’m going to use my phone, I put it in one of the front pockets. Otherwise, it goes in the new rear waterproof pocket. Nice addition. The reason I give it 4 stars is that this ‘smallest’ vest seems to be bigger/longer than previous versions. If I need more space, I’ll take a bigger vest. I want my smallest vest to be as small as possible. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would. Ultraspire – make the Spry 4.0 smaller?

Bought this vest a few weeks ago, love it. Simple and holds an iPhone 11 Pro Max perfectly. Have taken it on several runs and have had 0 issues. Very happy customer.

I’ve been running in the Sprye for several months now – first off, it’s cute and a great color. But more importantly, I was worried about the bottles bouncing around/out of the front pockets and that wasn’t the case at all – they are super secure! The little magnetic pocket is great for keys and it holds my giant phone great. I do feel that it sits a little lower than other vests, but definitely not a big issue and it would probably be awkward if it sat higher with the double bottles in the front.

I love my Zygos 4.0 but wanted something very minimal for mid distance up to 50K and I think I found my vest. The bottles stay in place and I can use the back compartment to hold my jacket, gloves, and light. I love the waterproof compartment so I can put my keys, phone, or anything else I need to have safely tucked away. I’ve also had my phone in the front when it’s not raining with no issues either and way more convenient. It’s footprint is so small but carries so much more than I thought it could!

    Lightweight Heavy Hitter
I don’t have much experience with vests, but I am super pleased with this one. I chose this option over the hundreds of others because it is small, lightweight, fits large smartphones (iPhone Xs), and has options for bottles and bladders. I’ve taken it on one 7-mile run so far, but have tested it around the house. It’s comfortable, the only thing that bounces or moves is the water inside of the bottles, tons of pocket/storage options, the magnet closures are super nice, and adjustability is great (I’m 6’0″ 170lbs). I was worried that the 550ml ultraflask bottles would be too large for this vest, but they end up working out quite well; I don’t think they’d fall out anyway, but the bottle pockets have nice cinch cords to keep them in place. The issues I have are the bottles do get in the way a bit if you’re casually hiking with your arms directly at your sides, all of the bungee cords can get a little messy/busy, I wish that there was a headphone port from the phone pocket, and the adjustable straps flap around a bit in the back.

Overall, I’m super pleased. I wanted something for my runs that wasn’t a belt and that at very minimum could hold my phone and maybe a bottle, but this offers so much more. It’s great for a short run, or you can load it up for a day out.

Perfect vest for long runs and marathon-50km races. Just enough water and availability to add a bottle if needed with out being to bulky. Sit on my shoulders well, and holds tight even at faster pace down technical terrain.

Love this vest!! I live in Florida and have struggled to find a vest that breathes. This vest is SO lightweight and fits all of my race items. I am so excited for my August ultra… finally a vest that I won’t melt in!!!

  9. Anna

I have the Alpha and bought this as a spare/for really short runs. It does its job, but I’ve found my bottles sometimes pop out of the pockets, and I have to cinch the pockets in so tight to hold my phone it is impractical for spontaneous picture taking. It took some time (and help of a buddy) to get everything adjusted how I want it, but the fit is great – I never know I’m wearing it so lightweight!

I’m enjoying the Spry Race Vest and 1L bladder reservoir. The vest is easy to adjust to a secure snug fit so much better that what I was using before. I used it a couple times on shorter training runs then used it in a 10 miler beach/trail race last weekend which I posted about. I packed my phone, Gu, gum, & a couple ginger chews. I added a magnetic clip to the hose so that it attached to the magnetic pocket for easy spout access. I didn’t end up taking any layers, but knew the pack would easily hold it if needed.

My husband and I have taken numerous RV trips since an early retirement a couple years ago including a couple 6 week trips out west. I’m excited to have this option for trail runs and shorter hikes.

I love this vest! I have the Zygos & Alpha vests, and the spry is perfect for those shorter efforts. I wear this a lot in the winter because its low profile fits well under my jackets to prevent my water from freezing in sub zero temps. Overall a great vest. Highly recommend.

  13. Emily Tuttle

Love this vest! I have tried three other brands and I have never lived my hydration vest until now. The curved shoulders are more comfortable than I have previously had. I have worn it for countless marathons—literally forget it’s on. I like the front magnetic pull pocket for salt tabs—keeps them dry, plus I carry my phone and keys and a few gels. I have found the one liter is sometimes not enough water if it’s hot out and then I use the aid stations at the end. In one ultra they refilled the ladder for me at an aid station. I wear it sometimes under a looser long sleeve shirt in the winter , with tank tops. Love it. I do agree with a reviewer who mentioned the extra strap kind of flops around —I have a small torso and have it cinched up so I have to tuck in the extra bungee cords on the front and the side nylon straps but not a huge deal.
